Firecrackers can KILL..... [DP]

MIRI: A 19-year-old Indonesian was killed instantly after a firecracker that he placed inside a metal pipe exploded and hit his head.

Miri OCPD ACP Jamaluddin Ibrahim told Bernama Wednesday (04.02.2009) that police had yet to get the full details of the victim and another Indonesian, who was at the scene, had been brought in for questioning.

The incident took place at about 8pm Tuesday near a private fish landing jetty along Sungai Baong.

The man was believed to have placed the firecracker inside the metal pipe with the intention of launching it.

"We believe that he was checking the firecracker after it failed to launch, when it suddenly blew out from the pipe and hit him straight on the head," Jamaluddin said.

Police were still investigating the case, the first of its kind here this year, and he hoped that it would serve as a reminder to the public on the dangers of playing with firecrackers.
